Michael and artist/sculptor George Landry have shared an enthusiasm for energy and its many forms of expression - in particular, the resonance between two or more persons sharing a given space. Designed and built by George Landry, engineered for sound by Michael Stearns and installed at the Double Rocking G Gallery in Los Angeles, Lyra was the result of combining sculpture and music – a tonal barometer amplifying the resonance of people in spatial relationship. Lyra’s 156 strings stretched 15 to 20 feet from floor to ceiling, the wires tuned to micro-tonal intervals and picked up by crystal and magnetic transducers. When the strings were played, clusters of the tones were fed into amplifiers and out through speakers located in the base of the instrument and in positions above the instrument.
During the day, Lyra was open to the public so that anyone could move through the installation, playing the instrument. At night, Michael and George performed with Lyra. Michael also played the Serge synthesizer, featured on “Return”. Each performance was recorded live onto a 4-track tape recorder. Two tracks received direct input from the pick-ups and strings while a pair of Neuman M49 microphones recorded the sound in the gallery onto the other two tracks. Selections from the recordings of the live performances were edited and manipulated to create this CD.
